3D models¶
Introduction¶
In order to use the Undulator CAD model, you must first have a CAD software compatible with STEP files. If you do not have this, you will need to find a converter online and convert the STEP file to a compatible type for you. If you need a BREP file, a BREP-converted STEP file for the Undulator has been provided in this folder.
CAD files¶
The CAD files for the undulator come in several different formats are listed in the table below:
| File | Description |
|---|---|
Undulator Assembly v5.step |
CAD model of undulator (v5 is the latest version) |
Undulator Assembly BREP v2.brep |
Same model as above, but exported to BREP format (used for finite element simulations, generally should not be edited) |
3D print files¶
Generally, the CAD models contain many individual parts (assemblies) which must be split into separate pieces before they can be 3D printed. The following subfolders contain information on the individual assemblies, models and print requirements:
- 3MF undulator files folder containing 3D printing files in 3MF format
- STL undulator files folder containing 3D printing files in STL format (these are *outdated- and are no longer kept up-to-date)
- Print configs folder for configuration files for the Prusa 3D printers that we use to 3D print our models
Use of the Undulator CAD model¶
Once you have obtained a compatible CAD software, use of the CAD model is simple, though there are a few things to keep in mind:
- The CAD model itself is made up of a lot of tightly-fit parts. They are meant to slide apart, and have no screw attachments.
- The blue rectangular prisms are stand-ins for the magnets. They serve no other functional purpose than to do this.
- The magnet holders and spacers are meant to fit directly above the magnets, it is not advised to use them in between magnets.
- The end caps are not in position for testing, however the rest of the model is.
- There is an extra slider not physically resting on the tube. This is to allow you to see the slider design outside of its use, so that you can see how it has been built.
Assembly instructions¶
The tolerances in the model are ± 0 mm, so when assembling be mindful that there may be some necessary finishing/sanding. The model is made up of 5 separate parts, some of which (in particular the magnet holders and spacers) can be simply made as many times as needed, though if less magnets are going to be used you should plug the holes for the unused magnet space.
Once built and finished, the components should be easy to slide together, the only other thing that is required is some kind of adhesive or other attachment method for the end caps. With that, connect the undulator to the beam path, and you should be good to go!
Note
While the end caps are included, they are not necessary if you plan to use an adjustable-size iris aperture. Please see the following issue for more details.
