Parts list¶
This page contains a list of all the parts necessary to build the laser.
Note
This parts list is just what we have at the moment and is subject to change at any time. In addition, for many of our parts, we have purchased extras for redundancy but it is not necessary to buy that many.
Parts¶
- DC power sources1:
- 1x DC 3 kV miniature power source (hazardous, fragile)
- 2x DC 2 kV miniature power source (hazardous, fragile)
- 1x Alkaline D 1.5 V battery
- 2x Alkaline AA 1.5 V battery
- Electrical components and microcontrollers:

- Specialized components/materials:
- Prusament PETG Jet Black filament (must be kept dry)
- Pure zinc sheets
- Neodymium rectangular magnets 60 x 10 x 5mm (hazardous)
- Ceramic high-strength rectangular magnets (optional, hazardous)
- 127 mW UVC light source @ 265 nm (hazardous)
- Adjustable iris aperture
- 40 mm diameter circular metal plates (used as microwave reflectors/mirrors)
- 1W generic incandescent lightbulb (for demonstration purposes, fragile)
Definitions of key terms:
- Hazardous means the part/item should be used with care and with proper safety precautions, including (but not limited to):
- Storing it in a dry location out of direct sunlight
- Ensuring nothing is stacked on top of it or could fall on it
- Putting clear warning signs to signify that it is a dangerous part/item
- (For strong neodymium/ceramic magnets specifically) isolating them from other electronic devices and sensitive electronics
- (For UV lamps specifically) ensuring they are only used in well-ventilated areas (or in a lab equipped with a fume hood), with UV PPE (including goggles and full-length clothing) worn at all times
- Optional means that the part/item is in our team’s inventory, but is not required for building/testing the laser
- Fragile means that it is a part that is easily broken and should be thermally and electronically insulated, as well as kept away from anything that could fall on/damage it
Alternative Parts (Things we thought about)¶
- Amp meter that uses the hall effect
- Uses hall effect to minimize impact from other magnetic fields and such
- They are designed to measure a specific voltage and only that specific voltage.
- We might need to shield the current source sensors
- The chip contains a low-resistance copper path for the current to flow through and a linear Hall-effect sensor circuit positioned nearby.
- Amplified and output now becomes an analog signal at around 2.5 volts
- Temperature sensor

We have multiple DC power sources at the moment as we are not sure what specifications we will need for the electron gun’s electrostatic accelerator, so we have bought multiple just in case. ↩
